Haymart's Farms

Haymart currently owns and operates 14 farms (over 4,200 acres) either directly or through affiliates in Arkansas, Nebraska and Maine as well as a mill and processing facility in Patten, Maine.  With the addition of our Agri-Cal business, we've added relationships with 250 partner farmers and added a grain terminal in Houlton, Maine.

Most of Haymart's farms are in Maine in close proximity to our Patten facility.  We have grown dramatically in the past two years and to continue expanding our acreage and scope of products.  Many of our farms are organic or are in the process of being certified organic and the majority of our farm ground is classed as "Farmland of Statewide Importance."  We prefer to buy abandoned farms or ones that have been completely over-forested.  By focusing on good land that has not been used in agricultural production for many years, we gain comfort that our land will be free from dangerous chemicals and that we will be able to control the standards under which food is grown.

High Meadow Farm

Size:  500 Acres
Location:  Cow Team Road, Crystal, Maine
Growing:  Organic Soybeans and Organic Oats
Certifications:
USDA Organic, MOFGA

High Meadow Farm looks like it belongs in the  “Hills are Alive” scene from the “Sound of Music.”  It is a beautiful farm and a special place. About 370 acres of the former “Beattie Farm” had been abandoned and forested over with the remaining 130 acres used as passively-managed hay fields.

Haymart bought the farm from a conservationist in 2013. While the farm had been in agricultural production for decades, many of the productive fields had forested over and we needed to build a new road network and extensively rock clear.  The result is beautiful, organic fields that haven't been touched by non-orgainc compounds in decades.

Grandpa's Mettle Farm

Size: 439 Acres
Location: Route 11, Patten, Maine
Growing: Organic Soybeans and Organic Oats
Certifications: Organic Certification Pending

Grandpa's Mettle Farm is a previously abandoned farm that sits on Route 11 (a beautiful Scenic Byway).  We actually found lots of mid-1900s era equipment strewn about what was mostly a forest when we bought it.  Haymart is in the process of clearing away the trees and overgrowth and using the wood from select larger trees for "Hotties" premium wood pellets and less desireable biomass to heat and power Patten Mill and be sold off to other mills.  Nothing goes to waste.

Grandpa's Mettle Farm abuts a corner of High Meadow Farm to the southeast.  The combined property is large enough that it actually spans two towns (Crystal and Patten). We plan to plant organic soybeans on Grandpa's Mettle Farm in 2015.

Falling Barn Farms

Size: 86.5 Acres
Location: Route 11, Patten, Maine
Growing: N/A
Certifications: N/A

Falling Barn Farms is a small, abandoned farm that we bought in a tax sale from the Town of Patten.  It is adjacent to High Meadow Farm and Grandpa's Mettle Farm and less than a mile from Haymart's Patten Mill.  The farm sits on Route 11 (a scenic by-way that is framed by a patchwork of beautiful farms and is punctuated by the carts of the many Amish families that neighbor us and that farm the region).  The farm has been reclaimed in late 2014 and early 2015.  It has great soils and we plan to plant organic soybeans in 2015.

Hidden Heirloom Orchard

Size: 40 Acres
Location: Route 11, Patten, Maine
Growing: Organic Apples
Certifications: Organic Certification Pending

We found Hidden Heirlooms Orchard in the middle of a forest.  There were groves and groves of heirloom apple trees that hadn't been tended to for decades.  With the loving help of local Amish families and experts from the University of Maine, we've been reclaiming the orchard.  Given the complexity and time that the project has taken, we unfortunately won't have a crop in 2016 but hope to begin selling apples in Summer 2017.  We can't wait to taste some apple varieties that literally may not exist other than in our orchard!

Rock Island Farms

Size: 154 Acres
Location: Town Line Road, Hersey, Maine
Growing: Leased
Certifications:
USDA Organic, MOFGA

Rock Island Farms has the distinction of having the finest soils of the farms that Haymart owns.  After having spent many years as a potato farm, Haymart is in the process of converting the farm to organic production.  For 2018, this farm has been leased to a corporate grower that will use Haymart's equipment and assistance.

Casey's Fishtale Farm

Size: 185 Acres
Location: Clark Road, Patten, Maine
Growing: Organic Oats
Certifications: USDA Organic, MOFGA

Casey's Fishtale Farm was the farm where our owner's son first drove a tractor and is a special place for us.

The Kay Farm

Size: 170 Acres
Location: Route 11, Patten, Maine
Growing: Organic Oats, Organic Sunflowers
Certifications: Organic Certification Pending

Haymart's newest acquisition.  This farm had been in the Kay family for decades and is very close to Casey's Fishtale Farm on Route 11 in Patten.  Mostly very high quality "Thorndike B" soils.  We can't wait to bring this farm into production.  Look for beautiful organic sunflowers bordering scenic Route 11 this summer.

Gina's Gourmet Garden

Size: 4 Acres
Location: Cow Team Road, Crystal, Maine
Growing: N/A

Certifications: Organic Certification Pending

We have been plowing out a portion of High Meadow Farm that is near town and can be used for gourmet organic vegetables (Gina's Gourmet Garden) and organic herbs (Haymart Happy Herb) and hope to partner with local aspiring organic farmers to develop them.

Haymart Happy Herb

Size: 2 Acres
Location: Cow Team Road, Crystal, Maine
Growing: N/A
Certifications: Organic Certification Pending

We have been plowing out a portion of High Meadow Farm that is near town and can be used for gourmet organic vegetables (Gina's Gourmet Garden) and organic herbs (Haymart Happy Herb) and hope to partner with local aspiring organic farmers to develop them.

Old River Homestead

Size: 1,152 Acres
Location: Route 116, Old Town, Alton & Argyle Maine
Growing: N/A
Certifications: Organic Certification Pending

Old River Homestead was the first farming property that we bought in Maine and we were taken by how a "bottom ground" property could be a forest.  Sure enough that when we looked around the property, we found old stone steps and the ruins of an old farmhouse.  We're sure that the property was farmed many years ago.  The property is bisected by miles of frontage on Birch Stream.  It's a beautiful property and we look forward to developing it into our first organic blueberry farm.

Enfield Plantation (757 acres, Enfield, Maine).

Sandy Spring Farm*

Size: 320 Acres
Location: Bushnell, NE
Growing: Pinto Beans, Corn
Certifications: N/A

Sandy Spring is a traditional, pivot-irrigated half section in Nebraska.  The farm is has been very productive and is typically in a conventional pinto beans / corn and sometimes wheat rotation.  The irrigation has continued to work well despite variable precipitation and humidity in recent years.  We are updating irrigation well casings this year.  Most recently, we signed an oil & gas lease for the property given promising wells that have been producing in the area.

Sandy Spring is managed by Farmers National and we sell produce to local elevators.

Bayou Berm Farm*

Size: 339 Acres
Location: Woodruff County, AR
Growing: Soybeans
Certifications: N/A
Bayou Berm is exactly what one would picture about a bottom ground river farm in the South.  The White River surrounds Bayou Berm and its fertile soil.  Farming on Bayou Berm tends to be very focused on White River flood stage and crops tend to be brilliant or mediocre depending on what Ol' Man River brings us.  Bayou Berm offers epic waterfowl hunting for those inclined and we continue wetlands conservation for this beautiful part of the USA.

Bayou Berm is managed by Farmers National and we sell produce to local elevators.

* = Owned by affiliates in Nebraska and Arkansas, respectively.
